Futbol (or Soccer) has always been my one constant.
Born in Chile, my earliest childhood memories revolve around futbol. Playing “pichangas” with my older cousins and their friends. Going to my first “Clasico” with my old man, having no choice but to root for his beloved “U” but secretly admiring the boldness of Colo-Colo, especially Caszely. It was then that I learned how to suffer with “La Roja”.
Later, as a teenager in the U.S., I rediscovered futbol after years of playing American sports. Now it was called soccer, but still felt familiar nonetheless. Soccer became my elixir. The one area where I could truly excel in my new country. Beyond paying for my college education, soccer served as my springboard from teenage insecurity to young adulthood.
Eventually, life came calling. I went to law school, got married and started a family. And while I continued to follow the sport (went to many Fusion games with my old man), I had to “grow up”. So my time with the sport became less and less.
Then, I decided to go to the 2006 World Cup. I spent two glorious weeks in Germany, treasuring every second of the world’s greatest sporting festival. And even though the U.S. went out with a whimper, my time there served as my epiphany. Soccer will succeed in the U.S. The depth and breadth of the American fans who came to Germany from all corners of the U.S., and their passion for the sport convinced me it is indeed here to stay.
Today, I have, once again, rediscovered my love for the sport. Truth be told, it never went away. I now simply aspire to be more than just a fan or weekend warrior. Now I want to be part of the generation that catapulted soccer from the shadows into the American mainstream. I want to do my part to advance a sport that gave me so much.
This blog is just a start. Hope you enjoy.
