Did MLS get too little in the transfer fee paid by Steaua Bucharest? Is a reported $1.5 million transfer fee enough for a 23-year-old All-Star?
Certainly, a year ago that fee would have seemed too low. Then, Toja was one of MLS’s most dynamic players (check out this YouTube clip). He could attack and defend, play a soft thru ball or deliver a chilling tackle. This year, Toja was not as effective. Whether it was the typical sophomore slump or simply having one foot out the door already, Toja looked a step off and disinterested at times.
Which raises even more concerns about MLS selling his rights now. After all, a cardinal rule for any investor is to sell high, buy low. While MLS more than tripled the $400k fee it paid for Toja a year ago, Futbol Insider believes MLS still sold low on this one. Toja’s age, versatility and flair suggests his value will only increase. With 2 years remaining on a contract calling for only $150k annual salary, MLS should have held onto this bargain for a bit longer. Or at least until another Mullet-wearing All-Star came along.
