Another big win for MLS. Another poor showing for Mexican clubs. Pretty much sums up last night’s 1-0 New England win over Atlante in the SuperLiga semis.
This means the SuperLiga final will be a rematch of last year’s MLS final. The Dynamo and Revs are beginning to distance themselves from the rest of MLS. And their formula bears repeating. No high priced foreign stars. Just quality American players with less heralded foreign players like DeRosario and Joseph. Should be an intriguing final. Futbol Insider picks New England to finally overcome their Dynamo jinx but only because the game will be in Foxboro.
As for the Mexicans, one day they will learn how to lose with grace. Both Pachuca and Atlante exited the SuperLiga in disgrace. As if losing to a pair of clubs with a fraction of their payroll was not bad enough, the Mexicans failed to act like the professionals they supposedly are. They took cheap shots both during and after the games. It got so bad, that even the overly biased Telemundo announcers proclaimed their embarrassment. Which is the equivalent of John Madden calling out Brett Favre (promise, no more Favre stories).
Having an All-American final is quite a coop for MLS. While ratings might suffer from not having a Mexican club, the benefit of showcasing its two best teams far outweighs any short term loss. Besides, beating the Mexicans and watching them kick and scream on their way to the locker room is always sweet.
